Audi locks out front row of the grid for the race on Sunday
Second qualifying of the DTM during the season opening weekend at Hockenheim was a thrilling affair, because the battle for the best starting grid positions for the race on Sunday was only decided in the final seconds. With a lap time of 1:34.516 minutes, Audi driver Mike Rockenfeller secured pole position for the second race of the season. His fellow Audi driver Miguel Molina drove the second-fastest time in qualifying, but the Spaniard will be dropped three places on the grid. With Mattias Ekström, another Audi driver inherits the slot on the front row of the grid. Reigning DTM champion Marco Wittmann (BMW) moves up one position, too: the fourth-fastest time in qualifying and third place on the grid for the race. In eighth position, Gary Paffett was the best-placed Mercedes-Benz driver in qualifying on Sunday morning.
Quotes 2nd qualifying
Mike Rockenfeller (Audi, 1st place): “I am very happy. Everybody wants to be in first place. In very challenging conditions, we managed to do so. Anything could have happened. It needs only one slight error and you are all the way at the back. We made a little change on the car. I had a better rhythm and also had the necessary bit of luck. Qualifying was really good. Now, we focus on the race. We have to look at the weather very carefully. When it is wet, things get a bit more chaotic. I definitely wouldn’t mind when it stays dry. But at the end of the day, we have to take it as it comes.”
Mattias Ekström (Audi, 2nd place): “Second place is okay, but not perfect. I had a super car. However, unfortunately, I made a slight error in the hairpin on my final lap and I came on the wet part of the track. That cost me too much time. However, I have a good starting grid position and I am optimistic. The race will certainly be really thrilling. Especially when the weather conditions are changeable, it will be difficult for all the drivers.”
Marco Wittmann (BMW, 3rd place): “A new day, a new attack. That is what I set myself as a goal on Saturday evening, and it worked out quite well. Third place is very satisfying. On Saturday, we slightly messed up in qualifying. Today, we made up for it and we are in a good situation for the race. Now, we have to wait what the weather will do. We just want to get the maximum out of it and finish on the podium.”
Miguel Molina (Audi, 5th place): “I am really happy, even though I will be dropped three places. Due to the weather, qualifying was a bit chaotic. The car ran very, very well. I had a lot of traffic and still set the second-fastest time. I am simply just happy. Now, I have to wait and see whether I can get further up to the front. Fifth place is a good position to start from. I can hardly await it.”
