Lucas Auer was classified first in qualifying at Hockenheim on Saturday. However, it was Gary Paffett who could feel himself as the winner. For Austrian Auer, his time of 1m32.635s was enough to secure his third pole position of the season. “That was a strong qualifying. In the free practice sessions, I looked to the left and to the right quite a lot. Also tried a few tweeks on the set-up for the team. But I didn’t have a good feeling, so we put it all back to the initial position. I am quite surprised to be on pole myself,” Auer said.

His fellow Mercedes-AMG driver Paffett (1m32.737s) ended up second. Thus, the Brit reduced the gap to championship leader Paul Di Resta to a mere two points. The Scot was only classified eighth with a time of 1m32.925s. “Being ahead of René is perfect. The gap to Paul has been reduced, too. That is all very positive,” Paffett said. Behind Timo Glock (1m32.751s), the best-placed BMW driver, René Rast was in fourth place (1m32.847s). “For me, nothing changes. I have to finish ahead of Paul and Gary. The grid position isn’t bad. It could have been worse. I am quite happy and confident,” the defending champion said. He will be starting from third place as Glock and his fellow BMW driver Philipp Eng got their third penalty in Spielberg and will therefore be dropped five places on the grid for today’s race.

The race starts at 13.30 hrs. The action will be streamed live at DTM.com/live and in the DTM apps for iOS and Android.
