Formula 4: Attractive support races with Mick Schumacher
His father Michael is a legend and consequently, the public interest is extremely high. Therefore, it will come as no surprise that Mick Schumacher used an alias, in the first years of his still short career. Only since the beginning of the 2015 season, his real name can be found on the entry lists. After several years in karting, the 15-year old now is making his first steps in single-seater racing – in the ADAC Formula 4. His debut appearance in the series was impressive and in the third race of the season kick-off at Oschersleben he even celebrated his first race win. Bow he will return to the Magdeburger Börde region – in the DTM support programme. From 11th to 13th September, the Formula 4 will contest the 17th, 18th and 19th rounds of its season. For Schumacher and the other F4 drivers it will be the penultimate race weekend on the calendar and therefore the upbeat for the season finale at Hockenheim. Currently, Marvin Dienst is in the most promising position as he holds the championship lead with 262 points on his tally and a 44-point lead over Sweden’s Joel Eriksson (228 points) in second position.
Dienst is the undisputed dominator of the season. He secured five poles, seven race wins and a total of 11 podiums. Nonetheless, Schumacher is the secret star of the series. Having made it to the points in his debut race he even achieved a result nobody believed he would be able to achieve in the third round of the season kick-off: after 16 laps at the Motorsport Arena, the 18-year old crossed finish line as race winner. So, Schumacher left Oschersleben as best rookie, resulting in enormous public expectations. In the following race meetings, however, he had to learn that even the son of a motor-racing legend will encounter his difficulties on his way up the motor-racing ladder. In the nine races at the Red Bull Ring, Spa Francorchamps and the Lausitzring, Schumacher scored just a single point – but is one of the most successful newcomers on the grid of the series, nevertheless. Since the Nürburgring weekend – the fifth of the nine race meetings on the calendar – he is back on the way up. With now 49 points on his tally, he is 13th in the championship, prior to the Oschersleben weekend and still may hope for securing the title for the best Formula 4 newcomer. In this ranking, Schumacher has got 190 points on his tally and holds third position behind David Beckmann (242 points) and Mike David Ortmann (237) –enough for keeping his title hopes alive but the gap is rather big. Nonetheless: should the young gun succeed in being as successful as in the season kick-off at the same venue, everything could be possible.
Meanwhile, passing Dienst will be difficult for any driver on the grid. The German celebrated five race wins in the past seven races to finish second and third in the other two. The biggest part of the Oschersleben crowds, however, is expected to support the young Schumacher, nevertheless. Three races will offer the spectators the chance of crossing their fingers for their favourites several times. On Saturday, the Formula 4 race will be started at 17:50hrs CEST (16:50hrs BST) as last race of the day, on Sunday, the second round will be started at 09:30hrs CEST and the third and final round will bee contested right after the DTM race at 16:45hrs.
