Wehrlein to start sixth – Ekström from the last row

  • Mattias Ekströms
  • Pascal Wehrlein

For the leader in the drivers’ standings, things could hardly have been worse in qualifying on Saturday: Mattias Ekström will be staring from the last row on the grid for the first race. “I don’t have any expectations,” the Swede said, visibly disappointed after the 20 minutes’ session. For his rival Pascal Wehrlein, it went considerably better, but the Mercedes-Benz driver was anything but happy with his sixth grid position. Wehrlein: “I could have been much better.”

Prior to the race in the Magdeburger Börde on Saturday, Ekström and Wehrlein are six points apart. When the young German succeeds in bringing his starting grid position home, he would move ahead of the Swede in the drivers’ standings, provided Ekström doesn’t make a tour de force and still scores points. However, the Audi driver probably won’t be taking any risks: “Now, we just have to see that we make it through the race without any damage. On Sunday, we will then drive with maximum attack again.”

For Wehrlein, his starting grid position could have been considerably better, as he readily admits: “Unfortunately, an Audi came straight out of the pits again while I was on one of my fast laps and prevented me from setting a faster time. An investigation is going on, but now, that won’t help me either.”
